Rising Costs of Health Care

With all the talk in politics about changes in health care and other medical issues, many Americans are confused about their options and which insurance plan to choose. Costs continue to go up, while salaries may stay more stagnant in receding economy, so making ends meet while paying high health care bills can seem impossible.

Those who are uninsured may not be aware of how much it would cost if a medical emergency arose. Emergency room visits alone can be thousands, which doesn’t include any costs for staying in the hospital, surgery, and other fees. Some health care facilities will provide discounts on service, but others will require payment in full or risk being sent to a collection agency. Purchasing an insurance plan may seem expensive, but will definitely cost less in the long run if any medical care is required. Employers will often cover a portion of the premiums, or working with a broker can save money as well.

Prescription costs are rising as well, especially for drugs that don’t have a generic option. Sometimes drug companies will offer discount coupons and other price breaks on their products, which can help. Calling around and selecting a pharmacy that offers lower prices will also be a way to save money, since many medications are taken on a routine basis and have to be purchased every month. Buying medications in three or six month supplies can be more cost effective.

Health care is a necessity in staying healthy, but can be expensive. Choosing options to save money will help the monthly budget for the whole family.
